We often receive unique, one-of-a-kind treasures for the Hospice Labor Day Auction. But in 2015, we received an item that continues to keep on giving thanks to Herb and Becky Noll, and Marvin Weaver, owner of Shady Maple Smorgasbord.

In 2015, a handmade carousel created by a Hubley Toy craftsman in 1991, was donated to the Auction by Herb and Becky. Owned by Herb’s father, the unique carousel was one of only two created. The other is still owned by the original craftsman. Hospice & Community Care helped Herb’s father during his illness. Herb’s father loved the carousel and considered it one of his prized possessions. Prior to the Auction the carousel was put on display at Shady Maple Smorgasbord, where Herb was the General Manager; he retired from there in 2021. Visitors to the popular restaurant destination would pay $0.25 to watch the carousel run while playing carnival music. Before the carousel even hit the Auction block it had raised $1,400 from Shady Maple customers with proceeds benefitting Hospice & Community Care patients and families.

Seeing the excitement that the carousel brought to his patron’s faces, Marvin bid on the piece at the Labor Day Auction and to this day it is a permanent fixture at Shady Maple Smorgasbord. Since 2015, Shady Maple has donated nearly $11,000 of the carousel proceeds to Hospice & Community Care, as well as other community organizations. And prior to his retirement, Herb had overseen this project.
